ARM’s new Vector chips are aimed at the High-Performance ComputingARM the chip manufacturing company has ruled the world of mobile for quite some time. ARM chips were used in devices from Apple and others manufacturers. Now the company is targeting the fast computers segment.  In order to take on complex processes like weather modeling, scientific research and economic prediction which are the domains of HCP (High-Performance Computing).

At the Hot Chip conference the company is going to reveal the ARMv8 chip. ARMv8 is a next Generation Vector Architecture chip for the HPC. ARM despite being successful in smartphones and tablets market didn’t find success in the PC market and still struggling to step into the Server market. Customers didn’t want to change to ARM from the x86 architecture as there are software issues involved.

The segment requirement for faster systems will be taken care by the Vector Architecture. The new architecture design could be similar to that of Intel’s Xeon Phi supercomputer chip, with a combination of Atom x86 CPUs and vector processors. ARM will also have to keep the recent supercomputer developments in mind. Post-K the new supercomputer from Fujitsu is already armed with ARM processors. The company might adopt to the new chip design from ARM.

Supercomputers nowadays mostly use Intel’s x86 chip architecture and a few IBM’s Power Processor.
